Trabzon Getaway

Trabzon Getaway (2 Nights)

Trabzon, or Trebizond (from its ancient name), is a city located on the Black Sea coast, cultural and historical capital of the Black Sea region.
Since its founding by Greek colonists around the 7th century BC, Trebizond, capital of the Pontus region, has often been one of the major commercial and political centers of the southern coast of the Black Sea. Trabzon has long been a necessary stopover for travelers venturing into Asia, such as Xenophon, Evliya Çelebi, Marco Polo, Nicolas Bouvier. It was an essential place for international trade, which justified the short-lived opening of French and English consulates in the city. In the Middle Ages it was a stop on the Silk Road; Marco Polo passed through here on his return from China, when the city was the capital of the Empire of Trebizond, which was cut off from the Byzantine Empire by the Fourth Crusade of 1204 and survived until 1461 when the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II seized it. A typical city that preserves many riches located in a beautiful region. Nearby is especially the Sumela Monastery* which is worth a visit.
